We are the American Forces Network, AFN, while you may know us by one or more of our many names, for more than 80 years we’ve delivered the best in news, information, and entertainment programming to American forces serving overseas.
The modern American Forces Network traces its roots back 1942 and the formation of the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) by the War Department. During the height of World War II, more than 300 AFRS stations operated in the European and Pacific combat theaters of operations. The number of stations dropped dramatically as the troops came home but AFN remained where the troops were, from the Korean peninsula to the divided city of Berlin. The American Forces Radio and Television Service served as the policy and governance entity of the network starting in 1954 and was under the control and direction of the American Forces Information Service. AFIS was dissolved when the Defense Media Activity was established in 2008, and AFRTS and AFN functions were placed under DMA’s operational control.
Whether you are interested in getting the latest news or just want to relax and watch a movie, today’s AFN provides the American military community with a wide variety of entertainment options on a variety of platforms. Over-the-air radio originates from 26 AFN stations in 11 countries and listeners can enjoy AFN radio on the go through the AFN Go streaming audio app. Television viewers can see AFN TV on base cable systems, directly in their homes via an AFN-capable signal decoder, or on the move with the AFN Now video-on-demand app.
